Abstract

It is argued with the help of an illustrative model, that the inter species hierarchy among the fermion masses and the quark mixing angles can be accommodated naturally in the standard model with (approximate) flavor democracy provided there are three exactly massless neutrinos and four families of sequential quark-leptons with all members of the fourth family having roughly equal masses. The special problem of light neutrino masses (if any) and possible solutions are also discussed.

  16. 2) The number of additional heavy degenerate chiral fermion deublets is also constrained by the S parameter (for a brief review and references see, e.g., sec VII p. 159 of [10]. The experimentally favoured negativevalue of this parameter still allows one extra generation of Heavy fermions at 95% CL (see the above references). A preliminary analysis of LEP 1991 data indicates that the bounds on S are considerably relaxed and positive values of S are allowed [17]. This may make the accommodation of additional heavy doublets easier. A more cautious approach in handling the information on S is, therefore, called for.
