Materials for advanced steam cycles

  • Published:
Journal of Materials for Energy Systems

Abstract

This paper identifies the important materials issues to be addressed in the EPRI development program for advanced supercritical power plants. EPRI, working in conjunction with a Utility Industry Advisory Committee, developed the design parameters desired for such plants.

The EPRI Advanced Plant Materials Advisory Committee, comprised of materials experts from industry and utilities, reviewed the designs and assessed what related materials development was needed. The committee identified problems to be addressed in the following areas: coal ash corrosion, superheater strength, steam oxidation, main steam piping, turbine rotor size and strength, rotor embrittlement, thermal cracking of heavy sections, bolting, and transition joints of large piping components. Potential approaches to resolving the problems were indicated.
