Summary

A method is given to calculate the polarization of nucleons produced in photonuclear reactions if the photonucleon is assumed to interact with the residual nucleus through a potential containing in general a spin-orbit coupling. The method is applied to the9Be(γ, n)8Be reaction where for the9Be nucleus the one particle model is assumed with the central interactions ofGuth andMullin. The maximum polarizationP max ~ 45% results forħΩ = 2 MeV at the scattering angle θ ~ 45‡. The dependance ofP on θ is shown graphycally for some energies ĦΩ near the threshold of the reaction. The polarization of photonucleons from a nucleus being in aS 1/2 ground state is discussed. Further applications of the method and the results are indicated.
