The Pauli exclusion principle from a self-consistent field-theory of quantum electrodynamics

Summary

The derivation of a property of the nonlinear field equations of a new theory of quantum electrodynamics (7), which indicates all of the physical consequences of the Pauli exclusion principle for a two-particle system, is extended to the case where there are any number of like (spin-one half) particles in the system. The result follows exactly from a nonlinear and purely field-theoretical approach to the description of then-particle system, that is based on the two fundamental postulates thata) require invariance under the transformations of the proper, inhomogeneous, Lorentz group andb) require that the interaction between particles rather than the free-particle fields be taken as the elementary entity. The result obtained is extended to the nonrelativistic limit of noninteracting particles where theinteraction field of the theory is shown to reduce to the antisymmetrized wave function for then-particle system of the Schrödinger theory.
