Generation of «beats» from a microscopic viewpoint

Summary

The microscopic mechanism for producing photons of frequencyv ₁ v ₂ out of a mixture of beams of photons with frequenciesv ₁,v ₂ in the presence of charged particles is explained. The generation of the «beat» frequency photons can be understood as the absorption of a photon of frequencyv ₁ by the electron and enhanced induced emission of a photon of frequencyv ₂ and another photon of frequencyv ₁ v ₂. This nonlinearity can manifest itself in a free electron gas. Production rates for freely propagating charged particles are presented, and the relevant matrix elements for bound electrons are discussed.

La generazione di fotoni con frequenza di battimento si può intendere come assorbimento di un fotone di frequenzav ₁ da parte dell'elettrone ed emissione indotta rinforzata di un fotone di frequenzav ₂ e di un altro fotone di frequenzav ₁−v ₂. Questa non linearità può manifestarsi in un gas di elettroni liberi. Si danno i rapporti di produzione per particelle cariche a propagazione libera e si discutono i più importanti elementi di matrice per gli elettroni legati.
