Summary
A study of twin-births was taken up in Gwalior city, Madhya Pradesh. The material for this study was obtained from the maternity and child welfare centres. A total of 14,925 deliveries were studied, covering a period from 1955 to 1964. The frequency of twinning was found to be 0.9 per cent. The majority of mothers who gave birth to twins were in the age-group 21–30 years (62.4 per cent; the next age-group with higher frequency was found to be 31–40 years (25.5 per cent). The proneness to twinning was found to increase from the third parity, and the highest incidence was found amongst the fifth parae. The sex-ratio showed a higher incidence of male births than female births. The average birth-weight of twins was found to be 2.0 kilograms. A very high mortality was found among the twins, i.e. 165 per 1,000.
