Do the 3/2+ Baryons Belong to the Representation 10 ofSU 3?

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

The classification of the 3/2+ baryons in the representation 10 ofSU 3is re-examined in the light of recent evidence for the possible existence of a 3/2+ 27-plet. It is found that the mass formula (« equal spacing rule ») alone is not sufficient to decide whether these baryons belong to a pure unitary decuplet or result from strong 10–27 mixing. Some consequences of this latter scheme are derived, and it is shown in particular that it does not solve the problems related to the widths of the 3/2+ resonances. An experimental test is proposed that could confirm or infirm the 10 assignment independently from the mass formula; the experiment, though difficult, does not look impossible, and seems worth performing, due to its crucial importance for unitary symmetry.
