Studies on multiple Coulomb scattering in nuclear emulsions

Summary

Properties of spurious scattering have been studied in a variety of emulsion stacks exposed to high-energy particle beams at CERN and Dubna. Spurious scattering, found with different magnitudes in different regions of the same stack, is characterized by a parameter, ϱ s , which is independent of cell size. Variation of the spurious scattering signal with cell size is investigated and a procedure for measuring momenta in presence of spurious scattering is demonstrated. Scattering constant has been measured as a function of cell length; it is found that its value decreases for cell sizes larger than 8 mm.

Si sono studiate le proprietà dello scattering spurio in diversi pacchi di emulsioni esposti ai fasci di particelle di alta energia al CERN e a Dubna. Lo scattering spurio, riscontrato con grandezze diverse in zone differenti dello stesso pacco, è caratterizzato da un parametro, ϱ s , indipendente dalle dimensioni della cella. Si esamina la variazione del segnale dello scattering spurio, al variare della dimensione della cella, e si indica un procedimento per misurare gli impulsi in presenza di scattering spurio. Si è misurata la costante di scattering in funzione della lunghezza della cella; si è trovato che il suo valore decresce per dimensioni della cella maggiori di 8 mm.
