Summary
The results of the Monte Carlo calculations of the decays of spallation hyperfragments (massA ∼ 20 toA ∼ 90) produced from 1.5 and 3.5 GeV/c K− interactions for various values of the lifetime are presented. The forward/backward asymmetry of the recoils at the decay point with respect to the hyperfragments is used to infer the lifetime. The results of the Monte Carlo calculations are compared with the experimental data of 235 events. It is estimated that the mean lifetime of such hyperfragments is about (2±1)·10−12 s.

This sample is chosen from the data collected earlier at the University of Oxford. For the details of the stack and exposure etc. seeKey et al. (2).
A sample of 119 π− captures was examined earlier (1) and it was estimated that the loss is about 20%.
This value is quoted to be 2.0 ± 0.4 in our ealrier communication (1) after correcting for 30% loss.
