Summary
The assumption of \(\mathcal{N}*\)(1400) dominance of the nucleon propagator is formulated. The direct \(\mathcal{N} - \mathcal{N}*\) coupling constant is defined and estimated numerically via « nucleonic » form factors and unitarity rather than by pure field theory. If \(\mathcal{N}*\) dominance is assumed to be valid asymptotically, finite (therefore presumably ridiculous) values are implied for the nucleon renormalization constant Z −1 and bare mass M 0 (Z −1⋍2, M 0⋍1500 MeV), and also a formula is obtained giving the n-p mass-difference in terms of the \(\mathcal{N}*\)(1400) mass splitting and the splittings of the \(\pi \mathcal{N}\mathcal{N}\) and \(\pi \mathcal{N}\mathcal{N} * \) coupling constants. Other approaches to the n-p mass-difference problem are reviewed, points of importance being: i) the feed-back mechanism of Fried and Truong is equivalent in principle to the present approach using propagator asymptotics, ii) however these and several other authors have erroneously assumed that the « pure electromagnetic » Feynman-graph contribution (which gives the wrong sign) is equal to a certain dispersion integral, iii) many approaches exist (present approach, Cottingham, Zachariasen-Suzuki, Pagels, bootstraps) which are not manifestly equivalent.

Recently an estimate of the Regge coupling strength has been made (Y. Serivastava: Phys. Rev. Lett., 20, 232 (1968)). The assumption is that Regge behaviour in the ν-variable (i.e. \(F\alpha v^{\alpha \left( t \right)} \), not \(\alpha s^{\alpha \left( t \right)} \)) is valid everywhere, right down to threshold. Then the technique of finite-energy sum rules may be used to deduce the Regge coupling strength in terms of the nucleon-pole residue, i.e. in terms of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. This receipe gives a convergent expression having the right sign and order of magnitude.
