Brian J. Caldwell (Australia) Professor and Dean of Education at the University of Melbourne. His trilogy of books with Jim Spinks—The self-managing school (1988),Leading the self-managing school (1992) andBeyond the self-managing school (1998)— have helped shape reform in a number of countries.The future of schools: lessons from the reform of public education (1998), with Don Hayward, former Minister for Education in Victoria, Australia, reflects on the landmark ‘Schools of the Future’ initiative and provides a policy framework for further reform in public education. Common to each book is a focus on learning and a new role for teachers. His work has taken him to twenty-three countries, and includes consultancies for UNESCO, the OECD, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
