Evidence for the existence of high-energy photon-initiated E.A.S

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

The existence of EAS with an abnormally low number of penetrating particles is demonstrated by the detailed analysis of the results of 105 hodoscopic recordings obtained during a running time of 28 months. These EAS constitute electromagnetic cascades deriving from a high-energy photon ((1015÷1016) eV). Their frequency is equal to (l±0.35)% in relation to the ordinary nuclear showers of equal size (and several times smaller if compared to showers of the same energy). On the basis of a sharp distinction between the two types of shower, there is reason to ascribe an extra-atmospheric source to these high-energy photons.
