Summary
The tropical virgin forests by their large extent in area, their luscious vitality, and great intensity of matter and energy exchange and storage processes are the climatically most effective cover types of the land surface of the earth. The progressing deforestation contributes approx. 20% of the global carbon dioxide increase in the atmosphere. It changes locally and regionally the atmospheric cycles of trace gasses, aerosols, water, and kinetic, thermal, and radiant energy. This is happening at a site, which is supposedly one of the major regulatory mechanisms in the global climate system. The ecological and technical possibilities to prevent further deforestation and to recultivate wasteland are sufficiently known to initiate effective counter-action. However, so far this has failed due to obstacles in the macro-economic, social, and particularly in the political environment.
