Summary
The gravitational field of a spheroid of small eccentricity ε, rotating steadily about its axis of symmetry, is calculated, inside and outside the spheroid, up to the orderk 5 using the Florides-Synge method of successive approximations;k is a small dimensionless parameter of the order (m/b)1/2 wherem is the gravitational mass andb a typical radius of the spheroid. Assuming that the constantsm anda appearing in the Kerr (exterior) metric are of the orderk 2 andk, respectively, we show that the Kerr metric, up to the orderk 5, is precisely the (exterior) field of the rotating spheroid. The eccentricity of the spheroid is directly related to the angular momentuma per unit mass of the spheroid. Since in the Florides-Synge method the field is calculated simultaneously inside and outside the spheroid, we automatically have an interior Kerr solution up to the orderk 5. Arguments are put forward indicating that the spheroid cannot consist of perfect fluid.
