Summary
The problem of heartwood formation in the roots was investigated with special emphasis on spruce and larch trees; for comparative purposes also Scots pine, European beech, European oak and Black poplar was studied. Besides some anatomical observations, the respiration und peroxidase activities in the ray cells were tested.
All the investigated tree species exhibit heartwood formation in the roots. Only the root region near to the stem wood is capable of forming heartwood; anatomically it is almost identical to that of the trunk. Roots of larch exhibit a coloured heartwood, while the rootwood of spruce contains an inner zone resembling the «Reifholz» of the stem wood.
The heartwood formation in the roots occurs as a result of the same cytological and physiological factors as in stem wood. The transformation of the parenchyma cells does not occur abruptly at the sapwood-heartwood boundary, but is rather a gradual process initiated and enhanced in the sapwood zone. Not all the parenchyma cells die during heartwood formation. Some retain their activity for several years within the heartwood and show the same cytological and physiological characters of the parenchyma as in the sapwood zone.
