Summary
A method is proposed to take proper care of final state interactions in processes producing two pions. This method is applied to the analysis of theT=0 pion-pion interaction in the reaction p+d→3He+2π. It is shown that the anomaly observed byAbashian, Booth andCrowe can be explained assuming a ππ scattering length of the order of two pion Compton wave lengths.

We are indebted to Dr.T. Truong for pointing out to us the existence of the simpler expression given in (6). See for instance Goldberger’s Lecture Notes at les Houches Summer School 1960 (Paris), p. 105.
OurS wave solutions are rather insensitive to theJ=1,T=1 resonance width as long as the first derivative symmetry relations are not checked. This weak dependence betweenS andP waves is in agreement with the results obtained byBransden andMoffat (9).
