Pion and strange particle production by 1 GeV neutrinos

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

Estimates are made of cross-sections for the production of pions or strange particles by high-energy neutrinos incident on nuclei. At 1 GeV the production of pions via the (33) resonance is found to augment the total cross-section by about 50%.

  7. Relativistic treatments have now been given byN. Dombey (to be published) andP. Dennery (to be published). Dombey’s result differs from (3.13) only because the static approximation is made in the pion-nucleon rest system, rather than in the laboratory. The improved kinematics reduces the forward inelastic cross-section by some 20% at 1 GeV. A new factor (M/W), whereW is essentially the isobar mass, causes a further reduction. The retention of such a factor after a no-recoil approximation (M → ∗) is problematic, but the details of the argument suggest to us that a factor (W/M) instead would be more plausible. This would more than cancel the kinematic reduction.
