The symmetrical vertex and the tree structure of dual amplitudes

Summary

Various generalizations of the method of Fubini and Veneziano for factorizing dual amplitudes are considered. One method dispenses with the need for scalar excitations and fits naturally with the derivation of a symmetric vertex. This vertex is derived initially with mass-shell restrictions. It is suggested however, on the basis of an examination of the four- and five-point amplitudes that the vertex may be used off the mass shell along with a suitable propagator to write dual amplitudes as sums over all possible trees. This decomposition would look like a perturbation solution of a field theory. The case of the five-point amplitude shows the necessity of including five-legged contact terms. This suggests that the field theory would be highly nonlinear.
