Sally B. Kilgore is special project assistant to James Coleman and the National Opinion Research Center for a longitudinal study of high-school students and book review co-editor for the American Journal of Sociology.

Thomas Hoffer is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Education, University of Chicago, and associated with the National Opinion Research Center.

A revised version of the report, of which this article is a summary, is forthcoming as a book, High-School Achievement: Public, Catholic, and Other Private Schools.
