Soon after our work was completed, the paper ofRasche:Nucl. Phys., A94, 301 (1967). came to our attention in which he has apparently been able to put a better limit onΓ. According to his analysis one would have as the best valueΓ c.m. = (6.4 +0.8−0.5 ) eV which is in even better agreement with our value. As pointed out byRasche, the error limits could be even further reduced by precisionδ 0 measurements in the energy region suitable for the effective-range expansion.
While the present work was on its way to the journal, the paper ofkermode (8) appeared. Using a hard-core effective-range formula,Kermode obtains a width of (6.14 ± 0.04) eV for the8Be ground state which is quite consistent with our results, keeping in mind the experimental uncertainties in the width.Kermode (8) also finds that, even at low energies ≲ 3 MeV (c.m.), thek 6 term is necessary in the expansion ofK (our results confirm this observation) and that the power series expansion ofK is not a good one at higher energies. It should also be stressed that the shape parametersP andQ become more and more meaningful as the uncertainties in the experimental phase shifts are reduced.
