Analysis of the nonpolar extractables ofAsclepias speciosa

  • Published:
Journal of the American Oil Chemists’ Society

Abstract

Asclepias speciosa is currently being evaluated as a potential hydrocarbon-producing crop. Chemical analyses of the nonpolar extractables of the above ground parts of this plant showed that pentacyclic triterpenoids and sterols account for over 90% of the refined hexane extract. In addition, low molecular weight natural rubber (cis-1,4-polyisoprene), of potential use as an elastomer, was obtained from the crude hexane extract.
