Conclusion

This study has shown clearly the influence that mica has on the anti-corrosion properties of water-based coatings and the advantages to be gained by its inclusion. The results have shown that the performance of these water-based coatings improves as the particle size, aspect ratio and the percentage of mica within the formulation increases.

Mica is a functional extender which acts as a barrier to the ingress of moisture. In practice, mica by reducing permeability of the film, limits the cathodic reaction required for corrosion to occur.

The availability of a wide range of mica grades enables the formulator to select the most appropriate grade for the application and to optimise performance characteristics of the coating to meet the specification.
