Abstract
Using the method of linear-elastic frature mechanics it is possible to estimate the bearing capicity of notch stressed timber beams. Based on theK-concept it is neceasary to know the stress-intensity factorK and the fracture toughnessK sto compute the bearing capacity. The fracture toughness is determined for spruce in the mode-1 (tension transverse to the grain) by using the compacttension-specimen (CT-specimen). The essential influences are the density, the orientation of the annual rings and to a smaller extent the moisture content.
