Bootstrap compression of a denseZ-pinch

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento D

Summary

The process of radiation cooling of a denseZ-pinch compressed by an imploding cylindrical liner is discussed. It is pointed out that the radiation emitted by the pinch is capable of ablating hot plasma from the surface of the liner which can cause a supplementary compression of the pinch. If the radiation cooling is sufficiently intense, the pinch may collapse to a radius of the order of a few μm. Fusion output at such high densities can be considerable in spite of the pinch temperature being only a few keV.
