Inhomogeneities and their control via solidification

Abstract

A review is presented on the origin of inhomogeneities and their type, quantity, distribution, and scale which arise in a solidification process. Microscopic inhomogeneity originates from dendritic growth as dendritic segregation and can lead to precipitation of secondary phases in the interdendritic interstices. Precipitation of high temperature phases, grain boundary segregation, and porosity are also discussed. Macroscopic inhomogeneities are considered as arising from macrosegregation due to thermal and constitutional convection, inverse segregation and gravity segregation. Structure can be varied by variations of composition, alterations in the thermal environment and additions of external force fields, and this is discussed from the viewpoint of promoting a more homogeneous solid.
