Abstract
Fracture in regions ahead of crack tips may be studied in cross section by interrupting the growth of the cracks and then causing them to resume growth along types of fracture paths distinctly different from the types of paths followed by the earlier portions of the crack. Microvoids ahead of crack tips have been sectioned by low temperature cleavage and by cleavage with liquid amalgams. The process of nucleation in front of crack tips is proved.
