Ledgewlse vaporization

Abstract

Ledge formation and migration during evaporation were investigated for cleaved single crystals of alkali halides. The dependence of ledge velocity on ledge separation was determined, providing direct confirmation for the Burton, Cabrera, and Frank6 (BCF) theory for the case of evaporation. The effect of an externally applied electric field on the velocity of ledges is discussed, and the influence of impurities on the surface topography of evaporated crystals is shown.
