Discontinuous precipitation processes in supersaturated copper-antimony solid solutions

Abstract

The kinetic aspects of discontinuous precipitation in supersaturated Cu-Sb solid solutions has been investigated quantitatively for the first time. A finely and coarsely dispersed precipitation mode is found. The coarsely lamellar regions have an interlamellar spacing about 2 to 6 times as large as that observed in the finely lamellar cells. The large-angle boundaries are the preferred nucleation sites for the finely lamellar precipitate, but in addition free surfaces such as holes in the sample, the sample surface, etc., provide nucleation sites. The kinetics of the finely lamellar discontinuous precipitation are investigated. The applicability of several models for the description of discontinuous lamellar precipitation is examined. The criterion of Fournelle and Clark is upheld for precipitation in Cu-Sb solid solutions.
