Abstract

Fatigue crack propagation rates in an A.P.I. 5L Grade steel were investigated by means of constant deflection amplitude bending fatigue tests at 640 c.p.m. on single edge notched specimens at — 50, — 10, 20 and 70°C in argon. The data were evaluated in terms of the crack propagation rate (da/dN) as a function of the stress intensity range (Δ/K), according toda/dN = ΔKm. It was found that dynamic strain aging has a major influence on fatigue crack propagation, resulting in a maximum of the crack propagation rate at room temperature. Similarly, the cyclic plastic zone size is a maximum at room temperature.
