Abstract

A quantitative study is described of the structure and the solution kinetics of cast and wrought 7075 alloy and Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy. Plastic deformation by rolling altered the cast structure and, therefore the solution kinetics of the two alloys in different ways. In the case of 7075 alloy, the second phase was broken down into small particles arranged in bands. Band spacings were significantly reduced by working, leading to enhanced solution kinetics. Results are in quantitative agreement with a simple analysis. In the case of Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy, most particles were unbroken and were little deformed by rolling. The spacings between second phase particles were affected only slightly. As a result, the solution kinetics of this alloy were influenced only slightly by working.
