Summary
The pathological wetwood—one of the symptoms of the fir dieback—has its starting point at wounds of the coarse and fibrous roots. At first it is spindle-shaped and later merges with others; thus the stumps of diseased firs show a considerable proportion of wetwood which often extends out to the bark.
Individual trees show the ability to stop the expansion of wetwood through the formation of compartments; this can be considered as a mechanism of resistance having practical importance.
