The role of Ileal contents in the spontaneous regression of rectal adenomas

  • Published:
Diseases of the Colon & Rectum

Summary and Conclusions

Spontaneous regression of adenomatous polyps of the rectum occurred in a patient with familial polyposis of the colon following ileoproctostomy alone, and with the defunctionalized unremoved portion of the colon remaining for a period of ten months.

On the basis of these observations it is suggested that the ileal fluid contains growth-inhibiting properties which may neutralize a growth-inducing stimulus believed to be present in the mucosa of the large bowel of patients with colonic polyposis.
