Investigations on the aging of glues for supporting structural wooden elements

Summary

17-year-old test samples, which were produced in 1942 for establishing the glue-bonding strength andfor the durability of the glue lines, were examined in 1959. Further tests were started with tension samples according to ASTM: D 143-52 and the specimens investigated after 5 or 10 years. It appeared that unextended urea resin glues after 17 years are still satisfactory in a thin glue line, whereas in a thick line they proved unsatisfactory. Kaurit glue WHK, apart from oakwood, still shows good strength after 11 and 17 years, respectively. Casein glues endured the long storage well, but are sensitive to high humidity of the air. Resorcin resin glues behaved good in any respect. Being boil-proof, they can equally well be applied where extreme climatic conditions are to be expected.
