Abstract
The composition of the cold and hot water extracts from fresh and dried fir wood was studied and compared with the composition of the wood. The main components identified in the extracts are polysaccharides (polyoses); the percentages of proteins and ash, however, are also comparatively high. 40–50% of the extracted substances were not identified. They are obviously not related to lignin, but they consist of aromatic compounds at least in parts and contain a relatively high amount of oxygen. Differences between cold and hot water extracts as well as between extracts from fresh and dried wood were evaluated.
