Summary
For the mechanical behaviour of wood its structure is of paramount importance. Above all, it motivates the elastoplastic behaviour. When applying models in the field of rheology, the elastic behaviour is represented by a spring, the plastic behaviour by a dash pot the cylinder of which is filled with a viscose liquid. Combining these models, the rheological properties of high-polymeric bodies and of wood can be described almost true. For studying the existing relationships, tests with compression perpendicular to the grain are particularly suitable. The results of these tests are equally depending on structure to a very high degree as was shown by stress and strain curves. The effect of the water bound colloidally within the cell wall as a micellar lubricant has also to be noted. The structural disorder becomes apparent by abnormality, i. e. breaks in the loading—unloading curves. Steaming of the wood prior to the application of stress favours the disorder of the fine structure. Attempting to get an overall view of the mechanical behaviour of wood, also the relationship between the modulus of elasticity and the second and third power of density play a remarkable role. The reasons for rising plasticity by an increase in moisture content and temperature were displayed and the behaviour of wood with bending was discussed. Also the influence of time, especially creeping, may be ascribed to certain structural parts. Structure and rheology are interesting not only with respect to basic research but they also furnish sufficient explanation for many phenomena in the manufacture, processing and utilization of wood and wood base materials.
