Abstract
The possibility of application of the gradient approach to rock strength estimation is considered in the case when the mechanical properties of the rocks change as a result of stress concentration close to rock structure defects, cavities, and mine workings. A criterion of shear crack appearance is proposed, and expressions for the critical stresses are obtained.
