Summary

The Main Dolomite of the Leba elevation is characterized by a basin margin sequence progressing shorewards from argillaceous wackestones/mudstones containing whole fossils, to peloidal and peloidal-bioclastic and lump deposits (possibly representing lagoonal facies), to a fringing oolite flat facies and a tidal-flat complex. This facies sequence, deposited on a relatively uniform and gentle basin slope, indicates that the area was a homoclinal ramp which has modern counterparts in the Persian Gulf and Shark Bay, Australia.

The depositional history suggests a shallowing upwards succession on the carbonate platform area. Sedimentation was locally interrupted by small fluctuations in sea level. In contrast, the adjacent central part of the Peri-Baltic Gulf shows a deepening upwards succession at the commencement of the Main Dolomite deposition followed by either a reduced deepening or deposition under a constant depth of water. Because of the different behaviour of the platform and the adjoining basin, the relief between them was accentuated during sedimentation and is estimated to have been 40 m at the end of the Main Dolomite.

The depositional history of the Main Dolomite on the Leba elevation indicates that subaerial exposure of the carbonate platforms in other areas was brought about by syndepositional tectonics which complicated an otherwise relatively simple depositional history.
