Abstract
The technique described permits observation of the voltage across 7 cm2 of skin during passage of direct and alternating currents, separately or simultaneously. Initial d.c. resistance is similar for equal currents of either polarity, and decreases with increasing intensity. The voltage produced by a constant current greater than 300μA falls in a few seconds to 1·8 V at the cathode, and 2·8 V at the anode. Non-linearity is less marked using 20 c/s alternating currents, and a.c. does not affect the d.c. resistance, but d.c. lowers the a.c. resistance. It is suggested that the response of skin to brief constant-current pulses can be represented by a model consisting of a fixed capacity shunted by a non-linear resistance, whose non-linearity exhibits no time-lag. The calculated response of the model to brief constant-current pulses is compared with oscillograms of the skin response, and good agreement is found.
