Cell renewal in experimentally obstructed small intestine in rat

Abstract

After the surgical ligation of ileum, regional mesenteric vessels and nerves, a generalized stimulation of cell proliferation in the crypts and migration on the villi was demonstrated in rat. This increased cellular activity continued for up to 48 hours and decreased thereafter. The cellular response to surgical ligation differed from those mediated by anticancer agents in that the change of the cell renewal rate was generally less. Generation time of epithelial cells in the crypts and migration rate on the villi was found to be the same order of the magnitude in the duodenum, and ileum.
