Supraorbital ridge and masticatory apparatus II: Humans (Eskimos)

Abstract

Thirteen adult male skulls of St. Lawrence Island Eskimos were studied to determine the factor or factors responsible for the development of the supraorbital ridges. Results showed that the determining factor is the ratio of the power arm to the load arm of the mandible. The smaller this ratio, the greater the traction force exerted by the anterior temporalis muscle and the greater the supraorbital ridge. Pearson’s correlation coefficient shows two positive correlations, i.e. between the anterior temporalis muscle and the ridge and between the ridge/sinus and the anterior/whole temporalis muscle. Conversely, there is a negative correlation between the power/load arm and the muscle ratio as well as between the power/load arm ratio and the ridge/sinus ratio.
