Notes

  1. The other data base is a cross-linguistic archive for describing the phonetic inventories and phonological processes of a sample of the world's languages.

  2. Grateful acknowledgments are made to John Olney, who is primarily responsible for distributing the original W7 tapes to nearly thirty researchers and research groups; and to G. and C. Merriam and Co. for permission to use this valuable and interesting file. See J. Olney et al, Two Dictionary Transcripts (Technical Memorandum No. 3987). Santa Monica, CA: System Development Corporation, 1969.

  3. An alternative course would be to develop a single program to convert unanalyzed data fields to an expanded WEBMARC format, with an extended subfield structure for these data fields.

  4. The results of the conversion are contained in two nine-channel EBCDIC-coded tapes. They will be available for distribution, along with a detailed user's guide, by December 1973. Thanks are due to the Regents of the University of California for making computer time available, and to Ruth Dunham who did the conversion programming.

  5. See B. Trnka, A Phonological Analysis of Present-day Standard English (English Seminar Studies in English, No. 5). Prague: Prague University, 1935. Trnka used approximately 10,000 words as a basis for his study; using WEBMARC a corpus of over 40,000 lexical items will be available.
