Summary
The methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate is incorporated to the synthetic media for rearing larvae, or to the food and drink for adults of the tachinid flyPhryxe caudata Rond. The toxicity was estimated by calculating the time giving a 50% mortality in the population (Lethal Time: LT 50). This LT 50 is equivalent to the mean duration of life or survival.
The new-hatched larvae have a survival mean time greater than 50 days in some nipagin free media. With 0,01 or 0,04% of nipagin, the LT 50 falls respectively to 41 hours or one hour and a half.
Without nipagin, the average life time for the imagines varies from 11,1 to 20,5 days according to the sex and the rearing conditions (density, existence of hosts and virginity). The females generally live slightly longer than the males. With nipagin the duration of life of the flies is shortened in all cases. With 0,1% of methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate the LT 50 varies from 6,5 to 13,6 days.
The nipagin M, in consideration of its toxicity at doses which do not permit to control effectually the proliferations of moulds, must be prohibited in artificial media forP. caudata larvae and avoided in the diets forP. caudata adults. This is probably true with others parasites.
