Abstract

Rhizobium sp. isolated fromLeucaena leucocephala utilized catechin as sole carbon source. Optimum growth occurred at 2 to 5 mM. From replacement cultures containing catechin, phloroglucinolcarboxylic acid, phloroglucinol, resorcinol, protocatechuate, catechol and hydroxyquinol were separated by chromatography. Rothera's test confirmed theortho ring fission of the end products of catechin.
