Survey and distribution ofCybocephalidae [Coleoptera] in Israel

Abstract

Nine species ofCybocephalus were found in a survey conducted throughout Israel:C. micans (Reitter),C. nigriceps nigriceps (J. Sahiberg),C. nigriceps sinister Endrödy-Younga,C. aegyptiacus Endrödy-Younga,C. mediterraneus Endrödy-Younga,C. pullus Endrödy-Younga,C. fodori minor Endrödy-Younga,C. membranaceus (Reitter) andCybocephalus sp. n.C. micans andC.n. nigriceps are the most prevalent: the former in the Coastal Plain on citrus and the latter in the Arava region on date palms.

In most cases the population density of the predator appeared to be related to that of the prey. Armoured scale insects(Homoptera: Diaspididae) were the main prey ofCybocephalus.

Résumé

Neuf espèces deCybocephalus ont été trouvées en Israël. Ces espèces sont:C. micans Reitter;C. nigriceps nigriceps (J. Sahlberg);C. nigriceps sinister Endrödy-Younga;C. aegyptiacus Endrödy-Younga;C. mediterraneus Endrödy-Younga;C. pullus Endrödy-Younga;C. fodori minor Endrödy-Younga;C. membranaceus (Reitter) etCybocephalus sp. n.

C. micans et C.n. nigriceps sont les espèces les plus fréquentes. La première est particulièrement répandue dans la plaine côtière ou elle s'attaque à diverses Diaspines d'agrumes (Parlatoria pergandii Comstock,P. cinerea Hadden etAonidiella aurantii (Maskell), tandis que la secondeC. n. nigriceps se trouve dans la région d'Arava, où elle est un prédateur de la cochenille du palmier dattier(P. blanchardii). Dans la majorité des cas, la densité de population des prédateurs semble être en corrélation avec celle de leur proie.

Les cochenilles (Homoptera: Diaspididae) sont la proie principale de cesCybocephalus.
