Summary
The rate of healing was shown to increase approximately three-fold between 5 and 10°C, and threefold between 10 and 20°C. Oxygen partial pressures lower than, and CO2 partial pressures higher than those in the atmosphere had a progressively inhibitory effect on suberin and periderm formation.
A method is described for maintaining humidities to within 1% r.h (relative humidity) of that desired. At 20°C, healing was most rapid between 70 and 100% r.h., and at 10°C between 80 and 100% r. h. Proliferation sometimes occurred at humidities close to 100% r.h.
Considerable variation was found in the healing rates of different tubers, due to their differing physiological states.
Varietal differences were slight, but it was thought that differences may be more marked earlier in the storage period.
