Resistance to gangrene (Phoma exigua var.foveata) and dry rot (Fusarium solani var.coeruleum) in potato tubers. 1. The influence of pectin-bound magnesium and calcium

Summary

The influence of Mg and Ca in the cell wall and middle lamella on resistance toPhoma exigua var.foveata (P.e.f.) (gangrene) andFusarium solani var.coeruleum (F.s.c.) (dry rot) was studied in two potato genotypes with large differences in their levels of resistance. Increased content of Mg, especially in the periderm and cortex, clearly enhanced resistance toP.e.f. but not toF.s.c. The effect of Mg was greater than that of Ca and the results indicate that the ratio of Mg∶Ca might be of importance for resistance toP.e.f. This effect can be explained by the pectin-bound Mg which gives a firmer cell wall and middle lamella than the pectin-bound Ca.
