Summary
In order to estimate dormancy during growth and storage, tubers of six potato varieties were lifted at four dates, with fortnightly intervals, and stored for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9 and 11 days, after which their apical eyepieces were immersed in 0,1, or 5 ppm gibberellic acid.
During the last 6 weeks of development on the mother plants dormancy gradually decreased.
After lifting, dormancy diminished further, but not in a regular way. This compels careful conditioning of tubers between harvest and treatment, in experiments in which dormancy is involved.
With potato tuber buds gibberellic acid clearly has a dormancy-breaking potency in addition to its growth-promoting action.
-
1.
