Abstract

Stresses resulting from temperature changes during thermal cycling over the range −44 to 125° C were measured in a composite open-end tube consisting of an inner cylinder of cured epoxy-impregnated glass tape and an outer cylinder of flexible epoxy casting resin. The composite tube was 12-in. long and 12.5-in. I.D. The inner cylinder had a 0.13-in.-wall thickness and the casting resin was 0.75-in. thick. Using resistance strain gages, the stresses were determined experimentally at various temperatures on the inner surface of the glass-tape cylinder, on the outer surface of the casting resin, and at the interface between the two materials. Because unusual problems were encountered in using strain gages for the above measurements and because the work done to overcome the problems has other practical applications, this paper presents detailed description of the experimental work and the results obtained.
