Summary
The difficulties of giving an adequate description of the properties of the composite sea are founded in the nature of the ocean waves themselves. As the wind generates waves, the total energy transferred to the growing undulations begins to spread out over a band of partial waves, the range of which extends more and more to longer wave components, as the sea approaches the fully arisen state. The spectrum of ocean waves is being formed, and the knowledge of the energy distribution in the wave spectrum is the basis of a rational description of the characteristics of the seaway, and of wave forecasting.
The heights and “periods” which change from “wave” to “wave” are the observable quantities in the composite sea. They form the characteristic pattern of the apparent waves whose properties are closely related to the energy spectrum. In the present paper a first attempt is made to derive the observable characteristics of the wind generated sea from its spectrum. For fully arisen sea, these characteristics are summarized in a wind and sea scale. This includes the most important information on the dimensions and the statistical distribution of the heights, “periods” and “wave lengths” of successive apparent wave crests at different wind velocities.
