Summary
The authors describe the analysis of industrial samples (distillation fractions of effluents from steam craking) by liquid phase chromatography on alumina gel at ambient temperature, using n-pentane or n-heptane as the mobile phase, and columns of 1 or 2 m length. Under these conditions, the hydrocarbons are separated essentially by the nature of their aromatic characteristics (number of rings, linkage of these rings), while the elution time is more or less independent of the possible presence of alkyl chains or of the length of these chains. Thus, a group analysis is obtained, quite different from the one achieved by gas chromatography.
